Charles Jang

Inspired by street art, Charles has been active in the graffiti art scene since college, with additional influences coming from indigenous art during his travels to areas such as Australia, Canada, Europe and South East Asia. As Korea's top pop artist, he creates stimulating artwork by projecting his emotions to characters from existing art. He is receiving acclaim both in and outside of Korea by incorporating paint work into various methods (exhibition planning, board work, art collaboration, streetlight, etc.) and communicating with the public vividly. He is solidifying his lead as a young artist through his collaboration with famed K-pop artists, some of whom have been featured in Samsung's Galaxy Note TV ad.

Q.Please kindly introduce yourself to the world.
To be honest, I wanted to become a comedian. (serious) I create pictures now, but I do it to convey joy and positive energy through my art to as many people as I can.

Q.What have you been working on so far?
I've been working on images I like (cartoon characters, robots, etc.) through painting and pictures and expressing them in my own way.

Q.How do you come up with a specific composition or styles for an art piece?
I try to find ideas through inspiration from a variety of mediums such as movies, music videos, magazines, etc. I enjoy images with brilliant colors.

Q.Do you have passions outside of art?
I'm always in search for new enlightenments. New things can be discovered even in the most mundane thing or situation and, in them, new truths can be found. This joy of discovery is what makes me truly happy.

Q.Any hobbies outside of art?
I enjoy other artists' work. So I frequently go to exhibitions and collect art.

Q.I’m curious about when and how Happy Heart came about?
I was under a lot of stress in my mid thirties. While searching for the cause, I realized that my greed was the problem so I started to think about what would make me happy. Then I decided to start drawing to find my inner child. Without thinking, I started to draw a heart. And now, this accidental heart character has accomplished a lot.

Q.Take me behind the scenes on how Happy Heart got started.
Happy Heart wasn't a deliberate creation with a specific objective in mind. It's a character that is a self portrait, a friend and a teacher all in one.

Q.If you could go anywhere for an adventure, where would you go?
Places such as Nepal, the Himalayas, the Gobi Desert, the Grand Canyon, the moon and the deep seas.

Q.The theme of this series is challenge and adventure. What challenges would you like to pursue?
There are so many ^^. I'd like to get a license to drive large vehicles such as buses. I'd like to learn another language besides English. I'd like to travel to India. I'd like to get my six-pack back (I had one during my military days). And the list goes on.

Q.How did you find out about NFT art?
I saw it on the news.

Q.Then how did you get into NFT art?
KAKAO invited me as a launching artist for their NFT market called KLIPDROPS and I began selling there.

Q.Can you tell me which artists you like and who your favorite NFT artists are? Describe their art?
I like artwork from a Korean artist named Zipcy. I have her NFTs. I also have the Clone X NFTs, which Takashi Murakami was a part of, as well as the pixel flower NFT. I like Beeple's NFTs. They're so full of wit that I enjoy them more each time I see them. Sadly, I don't own his NFTs.

Q.How do you predict the future of NFT art and its market?
I expect tremendous growth of the NFT art market. Art will come in various forms through various markets. Once you get a taste for NFT art, there's no turning back. ^^

Q.What was behind your decision to launch NFT art through ARKPIA?
They have a deep respect and consideration for artists. Even the management team has a deep understanding of art. I was certain that this team would be trustworthy not only to the artists, but purchasers of NFT art as well.

Q.Before we wrap up, any last thoughts?
Spread infinite positive energy throughout the world with the 3D Happy Heart project HEAC.
